OVERGROWN PROPERTIES

Council has been made aware of a number of overgrown properties in Nyngan and the villages.

A property owner has a responsibility to ensure their land is maintained to an acceptable standard, so it doesn’t become a fire risk or a harbour for rodents, snakes and other problematic animals. Legislation requires Council to follow a process when it is notified of an overgrown property.  After inspecting the property, Council will notify the property owner before issuing a “Notice of Intention to issue an Order to the property owner under Section 124 of the Local Government Act 1993”. Council then inspects the property a couple of weeks later and if the property is still overgrown the Order is issued. The legislation requires 'reasonable time' is given for the property owner to complete the required works, but should this not happen Council can pursue the matter - and if necessary complete the required work with all costs passed onto the landowner. If you would like more information or to notify Council of an overgrown property please contact our administration on 68359000 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. NYNGAN SHOW DAY 2026 – COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Council is required to make formal application to the Minister for Industrial Relations for the declaration of a local public holiday for Show Day which falls on Monday 18 May 2026. Legislation makes provision for the declaration of local event days as an alternative to local public holidays. Based on information provided by NSW Industrial Relations the potential impacts on business and the community for a public holiday as opposed to a local event day in a designated Local Government area are:-

Public Holidays

  • Banks are required to close unless they hold specific approval to remain open.
  • Shops are free to open without restriction.
  • All employees who work in the designated area are entitled to be absent from work.
  • Those employees who work may have an entitlement to penalty rates.

Local Event Day

  • Banks and shops are free to open without restriction.
  • Entitlements to paid time off work or penalty rates for employees will only arise where they have been agreed at a workplace level.

Council invites members of the public and local businesses to provide input into this decision. Council will consider any submissions at its meeting to be held on Thursday 23 October 2025 before making application to the Minister. Comments must be received by COB, Monday 13 October, 2025, and should be addressed to:
