Pets & Animals
Bogan Shire Council is committed to promoting responsible pet ownership while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community. Council plays an important role in managing companion animals in accordance with the NSW Companion Animals Act, supporting both pet owners and the wider community.
Council’s responsibilities include:
- Registration and lifetime identification (microchipping) of cats and dogs
- Management of stray, roaming and nuisance animals
- Investigation of dog attacks and aggressive behaviour
- Regulation of restricted, dangerous and menacing dogs
- Operation of Council’s Animal Pound
- Enforcement of pet ownership responsibilities and related legislation
- Responding to complaints regarding barking dogs, wandering livestock and animal welfare concerns
All impounded animals must be microchipped and registered prior to release, and fees may apply. Council Rangers work closely with residents to encourage responsible pet ownership, including keeping pets properly contained, supervised in public places, and under effective control at all times.
Council also provides information and guidance on topics such as dangerous and menacing dogs, responsibilities under the Companion Animals Act, and living with dogs in rural communities.
By working together, we can ensure Bogan Shire remains a safe, pet-friendly community for residents and visitors alike.
