Dangerous Dogs

Bogan Shire Council is committed to promoting community safety and responsible pet ownership.

Under New South Wales legislation, certain dogs may be classified as dangerous or menacing based on their behaviour. These classifications help identify dogs that pose a risk to people or other animals and outline the responsibilities of owners in managing them safely.

Detailed definitions and explanations of dangerous and menacing dogs are available on the NSW Office of Local Government website to help residents identify aggressive behaviour and understand when a dog may be classified as dangerous or menacing

Council also encourages all dog owners to read the ‘Restricted and Dangerous Dogs in NSW’ brochure. This publication outlines:

  • Owner responsibilities and legal obligations

  • Control, containment, and signage requirements

  • Registration and identification requirements

  • Penalties and enforcement actions that may apply under the Companion Animals Act 1998

For residents living in rural areas, Council strongly recommends reviewing the ‘Dogs in Rural Communities’ brochure. This resource provides practical guidance on responsible dog ownership in rural settings, including managing roaming dogs, protecting livestock, and maintaining community safety.

By understanding and complying with these requirements, dog owners play an important role in keeping Bogan Shire a safe and respectful community for everyone.
