Barking Dogs & Nuisance Cats
Bogan Shire Council understands that pets are an important part of many households. However, excessive barking and nuisance cats can impact neighbours and the wider community. Responsible pet ownership helps ensure everyone can enjoy a safe and peaceful environment.
Barking Dogs
Dogs may bark for many reasons including boredom, loneliness, hunger, protecting their territory, or reacting to noises and passers-by. While some barking is normal, persistent or excessive barking can become a nuisance to nearby residents.
If a barking dog is affecting you, it is often helpful to speak with the owner first. In many cases the owner may not be aware their dog is causing a disturbance.
Dog owners are encouraged to:
- Ensure their dog has adequate exercise and stimulation
- Provide shelter, food and water
- Prevent their dog from becoming bored or lonely
- Reduce triggers such as people or animals passing the property
- Consider training or behavioural advice if barking continues
If the issue cannot be resolved directly with the owner, residents can contact Bogan Shire Council to discuss the situation. Council may investigate complaints and work with the dog owner to resolve the issue under the Companion Animals Act 1998.
Nuisance Cats
Cats that roam can cause problems such as entering neighbouring properties, damaging gardens, fighting with other animals, or impacting local wildlife.
Cat owners can help prevent nuisance issues by:
- Keeping cats indoors, particularly at night
- Providing enrichment and stimulation within the home
- Ensuring cats are desexed and properly identified
- Using secure outdoor enclosures or “cat runs”
If a cat regularly enters your property and becomes a nuisance, residents are encouraged to first discuss the issue with the cat’s owner where possible.
Bogan Shire Council can provide advice on responsible cat ownership and may assist in managing ongoing nuisance issues in accordance with relevant legislation.
Working Together
Responsible pet ownership benefits the entire community. By ensuring pets are properly cared for and managed, residents can help maintain a respectful and enjoyable environment for everyone in Bogan Shire.
