Library Membership

Membership is open to all permanent residents of the region free of charge. You simply need to complete an application form at the Library and provide current official identification with your name and address. A parent / guardian is required to sign on behalf of patrons under 16 years of age. A membership card is given to each borrower on joining. This card must be presented for each transaction.

Temporary Borrowers

For those who are residing or taking holidays in the area for a short time, temporary membership is available for the duration of your stay. If you have your home library card with you, please bring it in when you come to join the library.


Can I borrow straight away?

Yes, provided you have produced the required identification when joining.


What happens if I lose my card?

If you lose your card a $2.00 service fee is charged for replacement. NB. lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately.

Public Access PC

Desktop computers with an extensive range of software packages and internet access are available for use by library members and visitors. Access to a Colour Photocopier/Printer/Scanner is also available. Printouts are charged at 30c for A4 Black/white and $1.50 for colour A4. IBM Compatible.

Free Public Internet access and free Wifi is available at the library. This facility is available to members and visitors.

More about borrowing

You may borrow up to 30 items including 2 DVDs at any one time. Items may be borrowed for a 30 day period.

Renewing and returning items

Items must be returned on or before the due date.

An after hours return chute is available.

Items may be renewed twice provided they are not reserved for another borrower.

Reservations

All items in your local branch may be reserved.

Items not held at your local branch may be available for reservation from another branch.

Catalogue

The catalogue is the key to North Western Library's collection. It contains information about items in the collection, including whether an item is out on loan or not. The collection contains items such as books, DVDs, toys, audio books and magazines. Increasingly the collection also contains digital items such as eBooks, eAudiobooks, eFilms, eMagazines and databases. Speak to a library staff member if there is something specific you are looking for that you are unable to find when searching our catalogue. Library staff are always happy to assist.

Housebound Service

This service is available to local residents who are unable to visit the library due to health reasons. This service is not only for the elderly, but also for anyone who is unable to visit the library short term or long term. Delivery of house bound's takes place fortnightly or as required on Wednesday mornings.
Bulk Loans

Bulk loans are available to aged homes, hospital and schools.


Vision Disability Service

Staff select from a special collection of "Talking books" for those who cannot select for themselves due to vision disability.

Children Services

Junior fiction, non-fiction, picture books, reading resources, as well as eBooks and eAudioBooks are available for loan.

Storytime sessions - This is a programme for pre-schoolers and are conducted weekly Tuesday and Thursday mornings during the school terms, at 10.30am for children aged birth to school age. Activities can include story telling and craft.

Baby Time Session - This is a programme for babies ages 0-12 months and are conducted weekly on Fridays.

Holiday Activities - Activities available when staffing permits. Summer Reading Programme held during summer holiday break.

Children's Book Week - Library displays Award Books and encourages schools to visit.

Simultaneous Storytime - Bogan Library participates in this national event each year in May

Public Internet Access

Free public internet access is available at the library. This facility is available to members and visitors. Prior booking is recommended.


Printing

Please see council's list of fees and charges for the cost of printing and copying.

An online public access computer catalogue of the Library's stock is available at the library. Our online catalogue can also be accessed via the internet at: http://nwls.spydus.com.  The loan period is 7 days for DVDs and all other items are a 21 day period.

New and Visitor members are permitted to borrow 5 items which includes 1 (one) DVD. Regular borrowers are permitted to borrow a maximum of 15 items on your card at any one time. This can be a combination of any items for loan, which includes only 2 (two) DVD's and 2 (two) CD's.


What if I am late returning my items?

At the present time, overdue items incur overdue charges. Fines are calculated at $1.00 per day per item. To avoid being charged overdue fees, contact the library before or on the due date for an extension. (Items that are on reserve cannot be renewed). Any library material lost or damaged must be paid for by the borrower.


After Hours Shute

If you cannot return items during opening hours, a book return is available adjacent to the front doors for your convenience.


Can I keep my items for extra time?

Yes, in most cases you may renew your items for another load period. There is a maximum of two (2) loan periods. The second loan period will only be allowed if there are no reserves on the item. Items can be renewed by:

 

  • Telephone: Have your card handy as you will need to tell us your card number.
  • In person: Simply bring your card to the library and ask us to renew the items you have at home.
  • Online: Simply log-on to our catalogue, http://nwls.spydus.com using your library card number follow the links to renew items.
  • Remember: items that are on reserve cannot be renewed.

 

Material for Loan

  • Fiction - there is an extension range of fiction available for both adult and junior borrowers.
  • Non-Fiction - the collection includes comprehensive range of non-fiction titles for both adult and junior borrowers.
  • Talking Books - a large range of fiction titles is available in audio format (CD, MP3 and Playaway). Some non-fiction titles complement this collection.
  • Large Print - a large range of fiction titles is available for loan in large print format. This collection is supplemented with titles from the State Library of New South Wales.
  • DVDs - DVD's are available for all age groups with some non-fiction titles.
  • Junior and Youg Adult Talking Books - in CD format are available in various titles, some with text accompaniment.
  • Periodicals - a wide range of periodical titles is available for loan, including sports, computers, gardening craft, fashion and music.
  • Toys and Puzzles - 2 items per card may be borrowed. A large variety consisting of puzzles, construction toys and games. Many have aboriginal contents which were donated by Families NSW for the whole community to access.

What sort of material is not for loan?

The library has a comprehensive Reference Collection that is for use in the library these include items such as encyclopaedias, dictionaries, local history.
